Fortune presented an Evening with the Fortune 500, held in New York City on Monday, May 7 at the New York Stock Exchange. This gathering of CEOs and other leaders from America’s most important companies focused on the most innovative and effective efforts that companies are making in job creation and as well as hiring and engaging with one of America’s most valuable resources: military veterans.

The dinner took place on the day the 2012 Fortune 500 issue was released. Among the distinguished luminaries who we heard from on May 7 were former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Mike Mullen, JPMorgan Chase Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon, Time Inc. CEO Laura Lang, NYSE Euronext CEO Duncan Niederauer, Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky, and former Continental Chairman and CEO Gordon Bethune. The evening also included table discussions that dug into innovative and practical approaches to turning engagement with veterans into a competitive advantage.
